Jasper’s only friend, Ethan, is dying. Jasper is a gremlin with enough power to level a city, but the magical energy he placed within Ethan to keep him alive is fading. Ethan’s only hope lies in the very artifact that nearly killed him in the first place: the Everflame.

The two join forces with Linna, a young pirate woman coming into her own powers, and Avril, the personification of fate itself. Unfortunately, they aren’t the only ones seeking the artifact. Hunted by their old friend Yon and his army of monsters, they set out to claim the Everflame.

Minutes to Madness is a lighthearted novel speckled with comedy while retaining the serious undertone of a race against time.

Review

I enjoyed this lighthearted novel (there's plenty of darker scenes as well, but the tone made it seem lighthearted fun). The magic system was interesting, explored via conflicts and mentoring. The world building was sparse. Plenty of action scenes kept me engaged right from the start.

I liked the main characters, not much depth but enough to be interesting. Many of the side characters who got enough screen time were handled nicely too. Most of them had interesting quirks. For some reason, I couldn't stop imagining Jasper as Rocket from Guardians of the Galaxy and Ethan as Alphonse Elric from Fullmetal Alchemist.

There are sequels planned as per the author, but this can be read as a standalone too.

My rating: 🌟🌟🌟🌟☆

What others are saying

From Dr3vvn45ty's review on goodreads:

This is a humorous and caring piece of high fantasy. The characters are very powerful, but so are the enemies, and everyone has their flaws and strengths. The humor can be a little on the nose, but it fits the characters and feels natural, not forced like many other books that try to inject humor where it doesn't belong.

From Neringa's review on goodreads:

This was a fun, fast read with a deeper meaning. Even though there were some darker themes, I was left with warm feelings at the end. The main message I take from this story is the belief in oneself.
